Amniotic Membrane Transplant
Mile High Eye Institute is excited to provide our patients with ground-breaking technology: the Amniotic Membrane Transplant (AMT). Research shows that when a fetus undergoes an injury in the mother’s womb, no scarring results at the end of the healing process. This occurrence is due to extraordinary properties of the amniotic sac that surrounds the developing fetus. Following birth, this amniotic sac is disposed of. Research and development has allowed us to use donated amniotic sacs to construct a small contact lens of transported membrane for use in eye injuries and ocular trauma. This remarkable device is applied to an injured eye via contact lens which reduces or eliminates any corneal scarring and accelerates the healing process. AMT has also been used in the presence of a non-healing eye to miraculous effect. Most medical insurances cover this exciting technology.
