Together, these conditions are called refractive error. They result from a mis-match between the strength of the eye’s optical focus (determined primarily by the curvature of the cornea and the condition of the lens), and the length of the eye, from cornea to retina.

Often, compensatory optics be attained with glasses or contacts. Nearsighted glasses are represented below with a ‘minus’ or concave lens.

Fortunately, for many people who would prefer not to wear glasses or contacts LASIK is a wonderful option.

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis, is really a 2 stage (though very brief) operation.

The first stage involves the creation of a corneal flap. The flap is a thin (approximately 1/10th of a millimeter) section of cornea, that stays connected via a small hinge.

This flap can be created with a bladed device, known as a microkeratome.

Dr. Richheimer and Mile High Eye
Institute offer 100% blade-free LASIK.

Stage 2 of the LASIK operation occurs after the flap is carefully lifted. Dr. Richheimer uses multiple laser platforms including the Allegretto Wavelight shown below. This excimer laser precisely re-sculpts the cornea, imparting a new corneal shape.

The amazing aspects of this laser includes at number of facets. A precise amount of cornea is removed by the laser, without damaging the cornea left behind. The laser also has a remarkable pupil tracking device helps ensure consistent application of the laser. If a patient’s eye moves, the laser moves right with the eye. This helps ensure the best possible optics, and the highest chance of 20/20 vision following LASIK.
